The question is though – do they still fold after 20 years or even after 5 years. Here’s what you can do.

DON”T FORCE THEM CLOSED! I know that should be obvious but just in case!

Go to the garage – find the 3-in-1 oil or just head straight for the hardware store. (less traumatic)
Oil the articulating joints.
This will also mean the articulating parts of the arms on the the arm chairs. Make sure you do this on grass or gravel as you will not want oil on your wooden deck!

Leave the chair/s overnight and then you can attempt to fold them.

Stand behind the chair.
Place your foot on the back strap of the chairs and pull the front of the seat up towards the back.
Do not force it. If it will not fold then you may have to bring it in for some coercion.

Should the rivets break in the process then you will have to bring it in to our chair hospital to be seen to.

And the moral of the story its …..keep those joints oiled!

p.s The recliner chairs and all of the benches with a back fold too. Same process….

Our rust finish is certainly the most popular, particularly for customers looking for an aged appearance. It is most suited to older homes and fits quite naturally in the Cape Winelands with the historic Cape Dutch buildings.

Naturally this finish is not recommend for coastal homes and we are also sure to advise customers that the frames will mark any floor surface. Rubber feet are not advisable as this forms a collection point for the water and can corrode the feet.

The rust finish is created by treating frames with a chemical converter and then left to oxidize (rust) naturally. They are then waxed with pronature wax to prevent loose brush off of rust. It is advisable to wax annually or when rust begins to flake. It is also essential that you oil the articulating joints of the chairs, most especially with this finish.

To wax your furniture:

  1. Scour frames with scotchbrite pads to remove loose rust and brush clean.
  2. Apply PRONATURE WAX to the metal frame with a cloth and rub dry.
  3. NOTE – the wax is NOT FOR USE on timber surfaces.

All hope chairs and benches are manufactured to fold, enabling easier storage or transportation when required. many people forget about this folding facility and neglect to oil the joints. dirt, particularly with the rust finish, can accumulate in the joints causing difficulty folding and in some cases breakage, when forced.

Regular oiling is recommended on ALL finishes.
Use a lubricating oil (like 3-in-one) on all the articulating rivet points.
Gently fold and unfold the product to remind it of this characteristic.
If you have neglected to oil and fold the product for a long period, apply oil and allow to stand for a few hours before attempting to fold it.
