what is the difference between karri and jarrah?
both timbers are eucalyptus’s. the karri is a lighter, blonder timber, forested locally in knysna. this timber is only optional on chairs. by following our recommended care procedures you can expect a lifespan of 12-14 years. it will weather to a grey colour similar to teak after about 12 months if fully exposed to the elements. timber that is not allowed to dry out will deteriorate very quickly. karri is prone to fine hairline cracks and will initially need to be sanded with the provided scotchbrite scourers, as it will roughen in the first few weeks. jarrah is a darker, redder timber only used on tables, trestle benches and scandinavian chairs. it is optional on other chairs. jarrah is a hardy timber, originally used as railway sleepers. by following our recommended care procedures you can expect a lifespan of about 25-30 year or longer. jarrah will age to a grey colour after 18 months, if fully exposed to the elements. as with karri it should not be placed in a shady postion where it will not dry after rain. read more on timber finishes
should i order oiled timber if i want my furniture outside?
no, not unless you like the look of oiled furniture. oiled timber is dark and will not go grey over time unless untreated. oiled timber requires seasonal oiling in order to maintain this desired look. if this oiling procedure is not followed correctly you could end up with a sticky mess. we refer to the grey/weathered timber finish as ‘natural’. natural timber still requires treatment. our recommended product is pro-nature plant soap. not oil.read more on timber finishes
can i protect my floor from rust with your rubber feet?
we do not recommend rubber feet on rust frames as it forms a collection point for water, thereby accelerating corrosion. if you do not want rust marks on your floor surface then we recommend either the painted or galvanised metal finish. read more on metal finishes
i have the galvanised finish and there are rust marks
within the first year of purchase tannins can leach out of the timber and collect under the feet causing marks which appear to be rust. we recommend cleaning the ‘rust’ marks off the frames with water and scotch brite scourers. the floor can be cleaned with a household detergent.
what finish do you recommend for seaside homes?
we only recommend galvanised frames for coastal homes. painted finishes are likely to start flaking more readily. please also read up on ‘white rust’ read more on metal finishes recommended timber finishes are natural or oiled
do you have rubber feet for all products?
our rubber feet are moulded to fit all chairs and benches except the cafe chair and trestle benches. we recommend clear plastic tubing for the cafe chairs.
i need to touch-up my painted furniture what can i use?
we use plascon velvaglo exterior paint, should you require a paint code please contact us
will the table surface stain?
it is impossible to completely prevent food and drink stains as these are natural products. stone tables will have been sealed and we suggest you follow our instructions to maintain this seal. timber surfaces can be cleaned with pro-nature plant soap. this contains natural oils which will allow the table to tolerate mild spills. if left in the sun most marks will fade over time and blend in with the natural product. should you still be concerned then a table cloth is recommended.
help my new timber has oil marks
if you haven’t had any accidents with the salad dressing then the marks will have come from the natural oils on our hands and bodies. in the beginning these marks can be quite obvious, but will disappear in a short time.
if you did have an argument with the olive oil….
•first try using the product supplied in the care kit. (pro-nature plant soap) •this is an attempt to saponify (convert oil into soap) the oil that was spilt and extract it with the alkyd plant soap. •make a fairly strong dilution of the plant soap – 3 parts water:1 plant soap •scrub the whole table with this mixture using the scotchbrite scourers specifically agitating the affected area . •leave for a 10 minutes and then scrub and rinse with clean water. •there should be a noticeable difference to the affected area •unfortunately the rest will only gradually bleach out with exposure to the sun •if not satisfied with this and in extreme cases you can treat the surface with oxalic acid- available from a hardware store •this is a strong chemical process that requires gloves etc. and will distinctly change the colour of the wood
