This year saw the long-awaited addition to the 3 range: the Iris chair. A design that has been brewing in Adrian’s mind for many years. A 1:1 drawing clipped to his drawing board finally found its way onto the factory floor. The weeks leading up to the festival involved numerous iterations from the team at the factory, ultimately resulting in a prototype that attracted considerable interest. Exceptionally comfortable, we were pleased to see the chair being tested by a wide variety of body types throughout the event. The intended wooden steam-bent back for the outdoor version remains a work in progress, however the indoor version, featuring a leather back, piqued significant interest.

2026 also marked a shift for hope, as the festival footprint expanded to include Observatory, Woodstock, Salt River, and Paarden Eiland. This placed hope garden furniture showroom firmly on the festival map — not only as a destination, but also as a venue hosting an event. Gareth Pearson from Cape Town Furniture Week joined Adrian Hope in conversation, exploring his journey and design process, which refreshingly does not rely on CAD, SolidWorks, or other digital design tools. It was inspiring to see many younger designers engage with Adrian’s candid account and draw meaningful inspiration from his experience.

The event also provided an opportunity to visit the hope showroom garden and delve into the history and renovation of this iconic building. Guests were treated to coffee and madeleines from Lion Bread, with the charming barista Tariq, serving excellent coffee through the morning. It was hard work, but exceptionally rewarding and we just might do something like this again!

Cape Town Furniture Week remains a highlight for the industry. It is run by an extraordinary team that works incredibly hard, curating the event, bringing new sponsors on board, facilitating multiple events and still looking remarkably calm and collected!

Congratulations to all of these establishments. This list is, of course, is not extensive as South African businesses continue to demonstrate excellence, contributing towards a growing national pride. We’d like to consider hope garden furniture as belonging to this group of high achievers manufacturing high quality products, as well as sustaining workers and their families.

This same phrase came to mind recently when Adrian realised that the leaking, dilapidated kitchen and toilet block at the Observatory showroom was not fit for human use. What any sane persons would have knocked down Adrian had a vision for.

Armed with the super hero, Washington, the gentlest man with herculean strength, both blocks were transformed over many months into cheerful, human friendly buildings, much to the dismay of the cockroaches. The metamorphosis, however, was not without its trauma. The lintel collapsed on Washington and Adrain and a lot of Arnica was consumed. The new kitchen window was put in the wrong way and had to be chiseled out and re-installed. Regulating the consistency of the natural mineral oxide colours for the walls failed all scientific experiments. Perhaps they should have knocked it all down and started again, but they didn’t and the results are consistent with their tenacity. With their nautical round windows it’s as if 2 ships have landed in the garden.

Watching patiently from the side was master craftsman Nazeem, eagerly waiting to move the sewing machines into this new space as ythe kitchen has been multi-purposed into a sewing room. You will now find Nazeem here cutting and stitching the Origami range, interspersing his work with anecdotes and pearls of wisdom.

Bord [noun] Danish  – table or a flat piece of wood for a special purpose

In any process of wooden manufacture, there is the inevitable matter of waste surplus. Too often these by-products are relegated to firewood or the tip. Our virtual wooden mountain of Jarrah off-cuts, accrued and set aside over years of furniture making, have now been repurposed and a family of simple useful items for the kitchen and bathroom has emerged under the artistic licensed epithet BØRD  – giving them a second life

The initial BØRD  idea, was inspired by the Scandinavian custom of using thin boards as a side plate, on which you built your lunch sandwich. These handy boards have been in daily use in our home for the past 25years perfect for toast in the mornings – earning  the name ‘breakfast’ boards.
On hand for sandwiches anytime and also convenient as small chopping boards, that pack easily into a bag or cooler box, when camping, picnicking or braai-ing. Solid timber pieces with their characteristic asymmetrical shape, are durable, food-safe and rich in natural grain patterns.

Using the thicker off cuts from table stock, we have increased the børd family to include the cheese and bread børds, which can double up as chopping boards. The bread børds have an undercut detail machined to enable ergonomic handling on kitchen surfaces.
Made from a solid piece of timber each board has the asymmetrical BØRD shape with a hole  to enable them to be hung when drying. Time in the sun is as good for them as it is for us!

Once an avalanche of giant pick up sticks, the longer, thinner off-cuts have been cut  squared up, notched and joined into linear duckboards. They are suitable for bath, shower or door mats and the waterproof glue and brass screws enable them to be used inside or out. The product offers durability, natural drainage and a non-slip surface – the proximity of the slat arrangement makes it practical and comfortable underfoot and they will also add a note of warm timber against the coolness of tile and enamel in winter months.

NOTE:  we do advise against using them in a constantly wet area -they need to dry out to prevent warping and harbouring strange beasties. To combat this they should occasionally be scrubbed (you can use the PRONATURE  PLANT SOAP  – the universal timber care product we use on our furniture) and left in the sun for a few hours – a small ritual of care and a reminder that beauty lies as much in maintenance as in making

Apparently in every relationship there is a person who stacks the dishwasher like a Scandinavian architect and one that stacks it like a racoon on meths, for those couples who are in successful relationships without dishwashers we present the possibility to explore this theory in your own kitchen with our counter top plate racks.
Available in  2 sizes – for single and couples- they are an elegant solution for drying your crockery. These handcrafted racks are both practical – the wood is very forgiving (for racoons) and visually satisfying (for architects) in  contemporary and classic kitchens. NB sorry-we do not make custom sizes.

Lastly and’ leastly’, in size but not purpose, is the little one in the family – made to the same design as the plate rack, the trivet, is a coaster of sorts for protecting tables from both hot pots and plant pots, indoors and out.

All our off cut products are hand-finished with care and make an affordable and thoughtful gifts for that friend who seems to have everything. Shop our selection of homeware or pop into our showroom where we carry stock.

Timeless beauty from the heart of Egypt

Quarried from the majestic Galala mountain range along the Red Sea coast of Egypt, Galala Limestone is a natural stone steeped in geological history and architectural elegance. Formed over millions of years, this sedimentary limestone is composed predominantly of calcite and features delicate fossil imprints, nature’s own signature etched into every slab.

Renowned for its serene ivory and warm cream tones, Galala offers a timeless aesthetic that complements both modern and classical designs. Its subtle colour palette, paired with the occasional fossilised detail, brings an organic charm and soft sophistication to interior and exterior spaces alike.

Galala’s enduring beauty has graced projects around the world, from grand hotel facades to serene residential spaces, often chosen for its ability to radiate warmth while maintaining a clean, refined appearance. Its versatility and natural elegance make it a favorite for flooring, cladding, countertops, and decorative features.

Whether used in private villas or public institutions, Galala Limestone reflects a quiet luxury, a material rooted in the earth, refined by time, and perfected by nature.

Trade customers are welcome to contact our sales representative Peter for a sample to add to your materials library.

OOSA is the prodigy of the very talented 7 Koppies team, Marc and James. the duo were clever enough to add Korbinian Winkelmann, and South Africa Tammy Tinker, to the team. Tammy brings a host of experience in the media and design industries and her enthusiasm for South African design is unparalleled! DON”T FORCE THEM CLOSED! I know that should be obvious but just in case!

Go to the garage – find the 3-in-1 oil or just head straight for the hardware store. (less traumatic)
Oil the articulating joints.
This will also mean the articulating parts of the arms on the the arm chairs. Make sure you do this on grass or gravel as you will not want oil on your wooden deck!

Leave the chair/s overnight and then you can attempt to fold them.

Stand behind the chair.
Place your foot on the back strap of the chairs and pull the front of the seat up towards the back.
Do not force it. If it will not fold then you may have to bring it in for some coercion.

Should the rivets break in the process then you will have to bring it in to our chair hospital to be seen to.

And the moral of the story its …..keep those joints oiled!

p.s The recliner chairs and all of the benches with a back fold too. Same process….

The sunset, however, is our own as the yellow walls of Rockwood Cottage burn orange. Drinks in hand, the birds settled and the fynbos silhouetted, we exhale a Friday evening breath, whilst the valley shifts into darkness.

Rockwood Cottage is about an 8 minutes walk from the main house. A well equipped, private space with en suite bathroom, kitchenette, outside bath and a plunge pool. At dinner time we saunter down the road to the warm main house. On warmer nights al fresco dining should be made compulsory, as missing the sunset would be almost immoral.

The butler, Artwell?s infamous G&Ts hit the spot and then we are called to dinner, a delicious home cooked lasagne, beef shin for Adrian and spinach and ricotta for me. Once again we wonder if James and Jay are hiding in the kitchen as it feels more like a dinner party than a hotel dinner. We start small talk with the other guests, luring them out of their dulcet tones and by the time the evening has grown long and the wine slunk down the bottle, the conversation has traveled many destinations. However if after a day of touristing you find the idea of convivial dinners too much for the central nervous system, meals can be ushered to your accommodation at a requested time. How very civilised, as my mother-in-law would say!

The fresh walk back to the cottage pleases the digestive system and Adrian fires up the wood burning stove. We tick off the coziness box. That itching guilty of being favoured guests returns as we slide into the Tissus d?H?l?ne linen sheets and watch Netflix on our friends’ account! I keep an eye on the two stuffed toy Daschunds, on the shelf next to the bed, in case they just jump on the bed, lick my face and settle down at our feet. Who wouldn?t in the face of such snugness.

Being a breakfastier the excitement of the 7 Koppies breakfast has me rocketing off to the main house as soon as the clock chimes breakfast. There?s always the option of taking the car to Rockwood from the main house, but we felt that the fynbos would object to not being admired as frequently as it was. Each month presents a new array of fynbos to be smelt and fondled. Being late winter we are thick in the red-orange hues of Aloes, pin cushions and Honey Bush. (Melianthus major)

Closer to the main house (garden by Franchesca Watson and Fiona Powrie) a path take us through the terraced vegetables garden, lined with citrus trees drooping with fruit. William the cat pounces through the lavender and I stop to talk artichokes with the gardener, but not for long because breakfast beckons?..

A spread of fresh fruit, granola, creamy yoghurt, pastries, jam and artisan bread from Motherdough in Franschhoek lies before us. All this is followed by a cooked breakfast of our choice from the menu. Artwell rises to the challenge of a making us cortados, which entices us to have breakfast all day, but we reign ourselves in and recline on the sun loungers, mesmerised by the Malachite sunbird chasing the white eyes out of the Coral trees.

There is no perfect season for visiting 7 Koppies, the wood burning fires keep you warm through winter and the 25 m pool refreshes during summer. Caught between seasons we were grateful for the wood burning stove and the warm days tempted us to plunge into the pool, but the temperature remained arctic and I and was not in a Wim Hoff frame of mind. Adrian managed just short of a full length underwater, whilst I managed a dip and shriek.

G&Ts are on hand all year round and each cottage is well stocked with a variety of alcohol and non-alcoholic drinks. The establishment relies on an honesty bar, so no need to feel guilty about finishing James and Jay?s best bottle of red! There is a variety of accommodation to choose from around the main house, all as beautifully and sensitively finished with some of the best of South Africa products such as wonkI ware and James Mudge furniture, and it goes without saying that you will find a a set of hope garden furniture outside each room.

Should you love something in your accommodation, like a the Simply Bee toiletries or Mungo Towels, then you can pop into their small shop that stocks a selection local goods, jewellery and books.

There is no shortage of restaurants and wine farms to choose from in Franschhoek and surrounds. The hotel staff are well equipped to help make arrangements and give local advice. As for us we were content surrounded by the beauty of the 7 Koppies so we felt, well, completely at home. To find out more or make booking go to the website.

PS if you love chickens, as I do, there’s is a great book on chickens in the main house loo.
